WIP Wednesday {25}

Ahh.. another Wednesday. I'll get right to it.

Finished this week:
Supernova! You can see it here.
Boy Burp Cloths, they are here.

In progress:
Aviary Bird Bath  - get used to seeing this one. I did the math and I need close to 100 blocks! eeekk! And let me tell you, these are not quicky blocks. I'd love your opinion. The original pattern is for a lap quilt and the border is 2". I'd like to make that bigger for a king size. Do you think 10" is too big? Should I do 5"? The blocks are 9" finished.

Kona Charm Challenge - In progress, I'll show photos once we've presented these at our guild meeting.

3x6 Blocks - So I had a bit of an embarrassment regarding these blocks. I guess I looked at too many blocks and was rushing too much to pick a block. The block I showed last week was the same block on of my other hive members had made! Wow, I need to slow down a bit don't I?  So I had a better idea anyway and did a mock up in my colors. This is from the block in Jaybird Quilts Carnival pattern. I'm debating on color or white border. What do you think?

Pending my attention:
Amy Butler bag
Curtains

Total WIPS: only 5! Yay!

Hop on over to Freshly Pieced to see what everyone is up to.

Oooh your Aviary blocks are lovely. I think a wide border would be lovely but I tend to figure it out as I go along! Or you could break up a super wide border with a skinny strip of sashing like I did on my Hoot quilt?

I love the shapes of the bird bath and carnival blocks -- so interesting! I might try a narrow strip of white.

I keep going back to the bird bath quilt in Elizabeth Hartmann's book, thank you for showing off your block - it is lovely and inspiring. I love the carnival block, but the yellow is, surprisingly, not really making me smile, maybe try white?

Oof, 100 bird bath blocks!? That's a ton of work, but I know it will be worth it. It's a great pattern.

I think a white border on your carnival block would look excellent.

Fantastic Supernova! And love your bird bath blocks!

Has your mom decided which color she likes best yet? I think a color border would look nice.

Oh I love your birdbath blocks! I would say maybe a 5 inch-ish border, depending on if you hvae leftover fabric, you could do a small white border around the whole thing and a "piano key" type border with leftover fabric used in the quilt top...just a thought. I really like your block for the 3 x 6 bee! lucky bees :)

Becky! Those Aviary blocks are amazing!! I can't wait to follow the progress on that one!

I really like the bee block too. I would go color border!

Great WIPs! Congrats on the awesome finishes too!!

I think the width of your border will depend on how it looks when you get everything else finished. Can you wait to decide until the rest of the blocks are pieced? Also, will it be a king size that hangs down over the sides of the mattress? If so, the border width might depend on how far over it hangs.

I love your bird bath blocks, I plan to make that pattern soon too! That fabric looks great, but I'm not sure I can give advice on what size.....

I don't really have advice on the size of the border, but your blocks look great! I don't know if you're open to a different color border on the Carnival blocks, but if it were me, I'd pick green, or maybe a bolder yellow. I think white would look nice, too.

Supernova is simply SUPER! I agree with Julie @ Jaybird on the carnival block.

Oh, I LOVE your Supernova. Absolutely gorgeous!

Wow, that would be a 90 inch quilt. Not sure how big a king size is or how far you want it to hang over the sides. I would probably just keep making the blocks and think about it. I like your block for the 3 x 6 bee.

Your supernova is gorgeous!!! I really like the binding that you used:) As for the carnival blocks I'd go with white:)

I vote to wait til you're done the top to figure out the width of the border. But in any case skinny+wide is a great border combo. Love the blocks, by the way.

I think you can get away with a total of 10" border, but I would probably break it into 2 or 3 borders, with the largest being maybe 6". Might look great to have the innermost border in the ivory/white, the next border being pieced (maybe squares of the colors in the quilt), and then the widest border last. JMHO...

I think maybe a 5" border but it might be easier to tell once you're closer to finished. Can't wait to see the progress.

Another vote for waiting on borders until you're done with the top. That's pretty much exactly how I did my Three Generations quilt. Love those bird bath blocks! It's going to look great in Aviary 2.

Thanks for linking up to WIP Wednesday, and happy Mother's Day. : )
