Denyse Schmidt Workshop

Last weekend Philly Modern Quilt Guild hosted a weekend of Denyse Schmidt Events. I wasn't able to go to the lecture on Friday night, but I heard it was fantastic. You can read about it here if you want info on it.

Saturday however, was a workshop which I was so excited to attend. Denyse offers a couple different workshops and you can find out how to host your own here at her site. We chose the Pure Improvisation workshop and it was fantastic.

I forgot to bring my camera (and my ruler - duh!). This photo was taken by Andrew (thanks Andrew!). I'm the one with the goofy grin because of course I was talking. You can see Denyse standing in the very back.

We took one of Denyse's new patterns and recreated the basic pattern with templates. Then made small modifications of our own. From there we did our own improv based on the basic shapes of the original pattern.

It was difficult for me to let go and just free form something. But ultimately very liberating! Here was what I originally came up with.

Below is some of the other works and mine is the one on the far right.

Then with just a little shifting of the blocks, it became this one below. Denyse posed in front of it with me at the end of the day. Thank you again Andrew for the photo! You can see more of everyone's work in Andrew's Flickr group.

It was great to be challenged like this. And of course so much fun to spend the day with fellow quilters. Thanks to Denyse and also to all the PMQG members who worked hard to put this together.  Definitely check out Denyse's website at dsquilts.com for info on her new book and workshops.
