A fun baby quilt

My sister recently asked me to make her good friend a baby quilt. Now that it's been gifted I can share it. Her nursery theme is Classic Disney.  My sister asked me for a Half Square Triangle (HST) quilt. Here is the inspiration photo my sister sent me. This is a poster that will be hanging in the nursery (I don't know anything more about it than what is in the picture).

So I pulled all the colors from the poster and here are the results!  I love these colors so much, I'm sure I'll be making more quilts with them.

I did straight line quilting on my domestic.

And managed to find the PERFECT backing fabric. These are all classic Disney posters.

For the binding I decided to go with Lime. I hear the mama considered a lime crib, so I think she'll appreciate the little extra lime.

Nautical Triangle Baby Quilt

I recently finished up this sweet little nautical quilt and wanted to share it here. This quilt was made with my accuquilt go cutter.  I had my two little minions cut a bunch of fabrics up for me knowing that I wanted to make a basic triangle quilt.

The nautical novelty fabrics are Cinderberry and the rest is from my stash.

Aren't those little animals and mermaids the cutest!?

I did a very simple straightline quilting on this to keep it soft and cuddly.

The binding is all the yellow print from within some of the triangles.

Anchor and Waves

Warning, this will be a picture heavy post because I just love this little quilt. This is my own design and I'm really happy with how it turned out. My sister in Florida asked me to make a quilt for her girlfriend who is having a baby this winter. She's doing a nautical room and my sister requested the coral and navy combo.

 
The fabrics are almost all Michael Millers "the Littles" line (which I see they have now expanded beyond nautical!!) and they are all nautical related. Whales, life preservers, boats and anchors. There are two other prints that weren't from that line that I snuck in, but I don't remember the names. One are little crabs that say "crabby" and the other is a boat print.

I did the clamshells with my AccuQuilt Go clamshell die and sorted them by color so it would mimic waves at the top of the ocean.

 

The white fabric is actually a tone on tone that looks like a nautical rope.

 

I free motion quilted the whole thing with swirls so it gave a watery effect. I used navy thread on the bottom, a coral in the middle and white on the top and only coral on the back.

 

The anchor I had designed previously with my Silhoutte Studio software for a past quilt. I printed it and then traced and cut the fabric by hand. I probably could have cut with the Silhoutte, but mine is pretty old and limping along. Sometimes it just eats my fabric at this point! I blanket stitched it to the quilt with my machine.

 

Label is pieced into the back per usual. Almost time to order more - do I redesign!?

 

And the binding is a gorgeous coral stripe from The Littles line by Michael Miller which I think sets off the quilt perfectly.

 

And now it's on it's way to Florida for a baby shower next week! I hope the mom loves it as much as I do.

bride and bridesmaid dress quilts

You may remember the tree quilts that I made last year. This was a project where a client had asked me to incorporate a bridesmaid dress into the quilt. The same client came back this year with another friend having twins. This time a boy and a girl AND she had the wedding dress in addition to the bridesmaid dress.

Challenge accepted!

You'll have to excuse the photos. We had a stretch of yucky weather and since I had to give these to the client before the baby shower, I had to make due.

First there is the baby girl quilt. She requested purple and grey. The binding and purple flower are from the bridesmaid dress. The white flower is the wedding dress.  And let me tell you - my palms were sweaty when I cut up the wedding dress!!

The purple was hard to photograph because it was so dark. Here's the best shot I got of it!

What I did was make a long tube of fabric and then used Vanessa Christenson's technique for a twisty flower. The tube of fabric was to eliminate raw edges. The client requested that the quilt be washable.

The pattern is Tres Flores by Quiltstory.

That little polka dot??  It's actually hearts!

And so on to the boy quilt. The client suggested a football quilt with the laces being the wedding dress. Once I figured out how to make that happen (interfacing and zigzagged edges on my seams) here is the final result.

I went to my LQS (Byrne Sewing) in search of an interesting brown for this quilt and found what I think is the coolest fabric ever.  It's a Robert Kaufmann Fabric called Kona Dimensions.  The ovals on this fabric have a slight metallic to them and are amazing in person.  It's called a jacquard? I was not familiar with it but wound up buying more here in different colors.

I think the fabric really made this quilt interesting. It had the potential to be very boring flat brown. but this brought another dimension.

All the quilting was done my me on my domestic machine. Free motion stippling. I'm feeling much more comfortable with my free motion skills and I'm proud of how this turned out.

The client was really happy with these and I hope the mom was as well!!

Snack Time Finish - Bloggers Quilt Festival

This is my quilt for the Bloggers Quilt Festival  Spring 2014! If you've never been, back up and follow that link, it's an internet quilt show and is always so inspiring! I am entering my Nautical Snack Time quilt. I did the Baby size which measures out a 37" by 48" which puts me in the Small Category in the festival.

 

Those of you who follow my blog got a peek at this quilt already because I wrote a pattern review for it. That review is at Sew Sweetness' blog. Spoiler Alert - I love the pattern. I love all of Julie's patterns. She makes everything so clear and easy to follow. And my favorite part is she does all the math for you if you want to make a different size (which I usually do)!

My cousin had requested a baby quilt for her little boy in green and blue. She said she used whales in his room so when I found Michael Miller's The Littles line. I knew it would be perfect for her. I didn't know it would be perfect for this quilt at first. Here was my first block where I realized what is so important to this pattern:

Do you see it? It's a great block, beautiful fabrics, but there is no contrast and you lose that winding effect the other blocks had. And THAT is when I realized I had my quilt for my cousin.

I did simple straight line quilting on it so it would remain snuggly for the little one.

And a chevron border fabric for some fun.

The back was a nice stash buster of some fabric that I love, but the patterns are too large to cut small!
