This is the October quilt for the Bliss group of do.Good Stitches. It took me a while to get this one done (obviously since it's almost January). The block is the Lynnebobsquarepants block found here.
Part of the delay getting this done is that we were down a stitcher so I had to make 4 blocks instead of the usual 2. Here are my 4:
One of the things that makes this quilt so fun is that everyone did the blocks totally differently. My only request was scrappy with bright bold colors. Some people chose to color coordinate their block to make the design stand out like this one from Carol.
Some used a single fabric line for their blocks, like Elizabeth.
It all makes this quilt so fun to look at! I really enjoyed quilting it (which is my least favorite part) because I got to take a look at all those gorgeous scraps within the blocks.
And I learned that I rarely buy large pieces of fabric. As I was looking through my stash for backing fabrics, I found very few fabrics that were more than 1/2 yard. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing? But, I managed to find these three to piece together for the back.
What about you? Do you ever buy larger pieces of fabric? And what do you do when backing a scrappy quilt??
I put a label on there with care instructions and the name of our group.
I decided to machine stitch the binding again. This time with a zig zag stitch. I'm really happy with how it turned out except for a few small bumps.
I don't know if you can see those skipped stitches. I called my service place about this and it turns out it's because I used a Coats and Clark thread. Apparently they don't agree well with Berninas? I took out my Aurifil because it kept breaking and this is what I get with the Coats and Clark. Next attempt will be Metzler. Anyone else have these problems with their Bernina?
At any rate, I love how this quilt turned out. It will soon be shipped to Wrap Them In Love where hopefully it will bring someone lots of joy.

Wow, it turned out great, Becky!!! Great job!!
So beautiful! I love all the different fabrics in there :) Great work!!
I love it!! What a great quilt!
What a beauty! I can see why this would be hard to part with. Great job!!
This turned out to be such a fun scrappy quilt. You'll just have to make another one for you! My quilt from the same block is one of my favorites. I love the design it creates when you put all the blocks together. Someone will really love this quilt!
The quilt is gorgeous. I love all the bright colors and I'd hate to part with it too.
It's such a beautiful quilt! I'm going to have to make that block sometime soon. I love it!
Wow Becky! That's gorgeous! I can see why you wouldn't want to part with it.
What a bright and happy quilt!
Beautiful quilt, Becky! I don't blame you for wanting to keep it.
It's beautiful! You did a wonderful job. It's amazing how it all flows even though the fabrics are so different.
I don't have a bernina myself, but some of my students have remarked on how fussy it seems to be with thread. My teacher only uses YLI Silk to piece in her bernina, and yli silk in the bobbin with King Tut 40wt in the top for quilting. I must admit those two are my favourites in my Brother as well. The king tut is so thin and elegant for a 40wt, and very very strong. Hope that helps? :)
Happy Christmas!
Oh wow, that looks fab, well done to all contributors!
The quilt looks awesome. I usually buy two or three yards of fabric when I buy stuff I really like and have a vague idea of using it for a quilt. I read somewhere that is an average amount for most quilts. So if I do scrappy and want to patch the back together, I will look for most of my one yard pieces or sew a bunch of small scraps together randomly and make that the back.
I am absolutely totally and utterly head over heels in love with this quilt and the fact that it is a do good stitches quilt makes it even more special. You did such a wonderful wonderful job on it and it gives me goose bumps. Would you mind if I featured it on my blog?
Love the quilt...it's going to make someone feel very warm and snuggely..
I have a Bernina and use Aurifil all the time... When you quilt do you put the thread through the little hole in the bobbin pin?
HI Becky! I just popped over from Lynne's blog☺ What a beautiful quilt! I love the end result of your collaboration--it is truly spectacular♥
You accomplished the goal of doing some good. What a beauty.
I do not have a Bernina but my Husqvarna and Brother get grumpy with Coats and Clark Dual Duty. I can use the 100% cotton though without trouble. I liked the idea of the zig zag. I will give that a try.
My Bernina doesn't like Coats & Clark either, especially the 100% cotton. I am using "Elements" from Connecting Threads. It is not expensive like YLI and works very well for me.
love it! I have loved this pattern for a while, and this looks spectacular.
i love that block. it looks so pretty with all of those scraps. the family it goes to will love it so much!
Great Quilt....love that scrappy combo! Recently I have been experimenting on my bernina with machining the binding with my quilting foot, and I have been having issues with skipped stitches on both the straight stitch and the zig zag....so my solution is to use a larger needle like a 14, and to use a regular flat foot rather than the quilting foot...this seems to work better...also I use king tut quilting thread and regular weight Gutterman cotton for the bobbin...good luck!
My Bernie detests Mettler. Within one or two minutes of stitching, she's clattering and banging in a most alarming fashion. I'm surprised about Aurifil - I have the best luck with it! Gutermann might work? It's way less fuzzy than Mettler.
GREAT finish, by the way. A great choice for a Bee block!
Oh Becky it is beautiful and I loved seeing it over at Lily's Quilts too! I agree with Stacy I would try a larger needle before I tried a different thread, the binding plus quilt is so many layers!
Wow! This quilt is amazing! I don't know how you can part with it! I'll be adding this to my list of quilts for 2012. Looks like an awesome scrapbuster.
Hope you're feeling well and had a great Christmas! Getting close :-)
Oooh, what a fun bee quilt! I love the secondary block that emerges from the white space. I'd be loathe to part with it also! Good for you for finishing it up!
That's beautiful!!! What a gorgeous quilt. I love it!
