Seagreen Clamshell and Octopus and Auction time!

My latest in the clamshell series is Mr. Octopus. I shifted to a sea-green color scheme for this one and again worked all from stash. I think I could make nautical quilts for the next 3 years and not run out of fabrics!

I'm also really perfecting my wavy free motion quilting! I might use it on everything going forward! There is a whole mixture of fabrics in here from Tula Pink's Neptune, to Heather Rosas Under The Sea as well as some fabrics with texture like prints.

The back is more of the Grunge print that I used as the 'sky' on the front and more of the green ocean color with my label pieced in.

And it's time again for the Circle of Life Auction at my work, Doylestown Health. The proceeds from this auction go to support our Cancer and Hospice programs. Clamshell and Whale

The next in my series of clamshell/wave quilts is Mr. Whale. For this one I went back to the coral color palate because I still had plenty of this fabric left to use.

Not much to say about this one. It's very similar to the last one, here's a close up of Mr. Whale and the quilting. It was again free motion on my domestic Bernina.

For the back I found lots of cool stash prints to use.

The binding is scrappy, made from the prints within the clamshells.

And my label is pieced in the back as usual.

Clamshell with Seahorse

After designing this Clamshell and Anchor quilt, I thought it might be fun to play with the idea in different colorways and see what I could come up with. The next few posts will be some of the results I've had with that experiment.

My first version is using a similar blue on blue color scheme with a cute little seahorse (they are one of my favorite sea creatures). Here's a close up of the little guy!

As you can see from the first photo, I was lucky enough to have this quilt chosen for a Philly MQG  Exhibition at the Mancuso quilt show. It hung next to Andrew Joslyn's modern quilt.

And I got the obligatory shot of me with the quilt!

Some details on it... here is a better shot of the fabrics used in the clams. This was all stash...surprise, I have a lot of nautical fabrics!

And this one is a better view of the quilting. I did this free motion on my little domestic Bernina.

The blue ocean fabric is a jaquard and the photo below shows the cool blue dots that are on it. I don't know enough about how this fabric is made, but the spots aren't printed, they are done with the weave somehow.

The back is more stash pieces put together with my label.

I'm really happy with this little guy and hope you enjoy seeing a few variations of this quilt in the future!

A triangle quilt for kids

As usual if you follow me on Instagram (@myfabricobsession) you've seen this quilt in progress. I finally finished the other day. And since it doesn't have a destination, I've decided to donate it to the 100 Quilts for Kids effort! Haven't heard of it? You can get details here. I hope you'll go and donate a quilt to your favorite charity as well.

My quilt specifically will go to Quilts for Kids. They are headquartered locally and I love the work they do.There are branches all over the country so go check them out!!

Back to this quilt. I used a FQ stack of Kate Spain's beautiful Horizon fabric line. For that reason, this quilt will be very hard to part with. I LOVE this line...

These colors are totally my go to colors and they just remind me of seaglass!! How can you not love it? It's so soothing.

I used my new to me AccuQuilt Go! and the isosceles triangle die to cut these. It made it super easy to cut. But then I was a dodo bird and didn't offset my triangles when I pieced it. If you look carefully at my points they aren't so perfect. I say this not to point out my errors, but to say that this was a learning piece. And to share knowledge! If you are piecing isosceles triangles, you need to offset by 1/4" to get a good point.

I'm still thrilled with how this turned out and think someone will be super lucky to have it. I may have snuggled a few nights on the couch with it just so I could stroke the pretty fabrics. Yeah, I admitted that...

Once I knew this was going to be donated, I machine sewed the binding to make sure it was extra strong. The binding is all scraps from the same fat quarter stack.

The backing is more of the extra fabrics and my label pieced in there.  Oh and I had no measurements when I started making this so I had some extra triangles. They went on the back as well!

Clamshell Quilt: a Finish

This quilt has been done for a while, I even took the photos months ago. It's just been so crazy I haven't blogged about it!  I was lucky enough to buy an Accu Quilt Go! off a fellow quilter who was upgrading to a larger model. My plan with the die cut machine was to be able to cut more difficult shapes that would need templates if I were to cut them by hand.  So I started with the 8" clamshell die and a layer cake.

This fabric line is Eva by Basic Grey. It was a layer cake that I've had sitting around for a few years waiting for the perfect project.  I think it's so beautiful and girly!

In some of these close ups you can see some extra fabrics that I added in to have enough to make this large enough.

There's some Tula Pink, Kate Spain and Joel Dewberry in there. My favorites!

My friend Denise (the feet you see above) was kind enough to let me long arm this at her place and I used this same panto that I used on this quilt. I love the girly swirls that have a secondary heart pattern.

Since this is so girly, my daughter is not enthralled with it. She "likes cool things, not pretty things". Sigh!  So this will have to wait for the right recipient!
